Your brand is your name your name is your brand...

The joy of being an artist is choosing who you want to be around and who you want to become. Take your work in the direction you feel it needs to be. Build your name. Stick by it, regardless of the pithy mindsets of others.

Here is some wonderful advice for those artists who wish to build their brand.

"It is a fallacy to believe that a brand is something that only Coca Cola and Pepsi should worry about. As an artist you are your own brand. Whether or not you know it or acknowledge it, you are already a brand.

How many times have you heard people go on and about Picasso only to learn that they have never heard of Cubism? They are clearly not interested in Picasso for his art but they are interested in the air they exude when they talk about Picasso. To talk about Picasso in some circles may give some people an air of intellect or sophistication.

Every brand has a story and you have a choice – let someone write your story for you (because they will eventually) or write your own story. Be sure to tie the story of your brand to your values and ethics."

Researching history...

The year 2011 I was inspired to create this work of art based on the 225 year celebration of the establishment of Columbia as the capital of SC. In my mind I began to wonder about the past.

On the grounds of the state capitol I see the ghosts of the past wander, surveying life, as Columbia grows. Those who helped build this political capital city with a thirst for culture and art. "We've had a number of individuals of all different backgrounds who've really made Columbia kind of a cultural melting pot and an exciting place to be," said John Sherrer with the Historic Columbia Foundation. March 2011 Columbia, SC celebrated 225 years. This painting is dedicated to the soldiers, firefighters, cooks, cleaners, autocrats, politicians, educators, artists a melting pot of people who created the capital of SC.

Reworking the roots!

Another reworking. I love this series, it was one of my first. My mother loved it so much, after she died I discovered all 3 paintings in her house. Mom, what a funny sneak, she had swiped them, years before and kept them hidden when we visited.
This rooted solo exhibit defined the of struggle I felt trying to have a gallery show. The consistent denials, criticisms from family & others reinforced my rebellious nature to stay rooted.
