Onomatopoetic Art Inspiring Art: Music Made Visible

Onomatopoetic Art Inspiring Art: Music Made Visible
Art Show & Silent Auction

Onomatopoetic is the collaboration between music composer Dr. Jesse Jones and multiple painters from the Midlands organized by Sarah Winsted of Trenholm Artists Guild.

Opening night; on Thursday September 4, 2014 at Certus Bank in Columbia, was a superb cavalcade of artistic styles and beauty. Guests were able to walked through rows of ‘for sale’ inspired works of art treated to wine and heavy hors d'oeuvres, viewed a wall sized slide show featuring each work of art with a brief description of exhibited artists, a band, silent auction and live painting.

Music was performed by band The Prairie Willows while regional artist Abstract Alexandra inspired by the band, painted a large-scale work of art. When asked ‘what she enjoyed most about the project’ Visual Artist; Abstract Alexandra stated “painting to music is akin to when one sees the color blue, pure harmony”.

This collaborative event between painters and music was took months, if not years to create. Various artists in the midlands were selected from a call-to-artists listing. Artists were provided with a copy “In Dulcet Tones”, by Dr. Jones’ with instructions to create works of art while listening to the music. The object to draw inspiration while creating paintings.

After the art show "In Dulcet Tones" made its North America premier on Sept. 28, 2014 at the University of South Carolina School of Music and performed by Dr. Rebecca Hunter (violin) and Dr. Lynn Kompass (violin).

Having a D'Vine Night

As you may recall  in a recent blog (http://abstractalexandra.blogspot.com/2014/08/benefiting-arthritis-foundation.html) my work with the Juvenile Arthritis Foundation.
Sunday, Aug 3, from 1-3 pm was a Gallery Reception at Lowcountry Artists Gallery in Charleston, SC for the Arts for Arthritis.

The pieces were for sale while in the art gallery for the month of August. Art pieces that did not sell at the gallery were on auction at the D'Vine Affair on Sept 6 and still available online (
https://www.biddingforgood.com/auction/auctionhome.action?vhost=bonebashDE&aalias=dvine2014).

The D'Vine Affair was held on Saturday, September 6 at Memminger Auditorium Charleston, SC. A wonderful event. As a participating artist I was delighted to see how well the art was lit and promoted.

The D'Vine Affair has become more than just a charity gala. Over the years, it has developed into an almost year-round inspiration for those with arthritis and those seeking to help them.
The Arts for Arthritis Program shows us all that children and adults afflicted with arthritis may no longer have to suffer some of the devastating and debilitating effects they once did. With current treatment, the illnesses that once placed kids in wheelchairs and deformed their joints can now be controlled to allow them to do things as delicate as creating artistic masterpieces. The art they create is beautiful living proof of this glorious transformation of how we view and treat arthritis.

Was a fun evening and a wonderful fundraiser.

24 Twists

In May I was invited to participate in a unique show entitled "24 Twists". This was the 3rd Annual Invitational Art Exhibit at the West Main Artists Cooperative Gallery 578 W Main St, Spartanburg, South Carolina 29301.

The art should match the theme in size & matter, were the instructions.
So I ordered a 24" x 24" gallery wrapped canvas and started my research into 24.

After extensive research I decided the Egyptian Solar Calender was all inspiring.

Here are the progress pictures of my painting...

The above painting is the final.

Benefiting the Arthritis Foundation

In May I was invited to team up and create art with children with Juvenile Arthritis
 Benefiting the Arthritis Foundation.
Mallory and I had a 3 hour session in July and completed two paintings.
During our painting session we did not discuss her arthritis. It was a great opportunity to mix colors and create art. She was all smiles at the end and we both enjoyed painting together.

CHECK OUT videos of our session by visiting my youtube channel (youtube.com/user/TheAbstractAlexandra)

demonstrating abstract techniques

On April 10 I demonstrated abstract techniques in a Fine Arts day at Aynor Elementary in Aynor, SC.

After checking in I was greeted by a knowledgeable student who led me to my demonstration room. I wa the only painter but they had several bands performing; jazz, funk fusion, and reggae. The music was inspiring.

_______

Repeat after me, Abstract Art can be anything you want it to be. If your neighbor says it's a shoe and you think it is a duck is your neighbor wrong? No. Everyone has a unique perspective regarding art. And abstract art can be anything one wants it to be, which is wonderful.

_______

In order to fully instruct abstract art I prefer to explain the process while painting.

When working with students, of any age, I encourage them to participate in the process of creating a work of art.

Beginning with minimalism, working through texture, incorporating blending, rubout, using various tools from canvas, paint to brushes and how to make a pointer finger into a painter finger.

______

Using a fresh canvas for each class helped demonstrate the art of minimalism.

_______

Briefly discussing subject matter and finishing up with the Warhol method.

Class sizes ranged 100-125 students. All excited and with wonderful and insightful questions.

Abstract of Abject Poverty

Abject Poverty
size: 12x12x2.5 weight: 8 lb
acrylic heavy texture on canvas  gallery wrap

Unfathomable realities endured by many in civilization
Without regard to beliefs, skin color, nationality or race
Run rampant; we must be moved to provide ministration
To ease the blight of poverty, humanity's great disgrace.
